About Sublette Wilderness

The Sublette Wilderness encompasses approximately 43,000 acres within the Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming. Established in 1984, it protects a remote portion of the Wind River Range characterized by steep rugged peaks, expansive meadows, and pristine streams. Elevations range from roughly 8,500 to over 11,000 feet, creating diverse ecological zones that host subalpine forests, alpine tundra, and riparian areas. The wilderness is home to abundant wildlife including mule deer, elk, moose, black bears, and mountain lions, as well as populations of sensitive species like the wolverine and the native cutthroat trout. This area's isolation means visitors often experience deep solitude, with limited trail development. Popular recreation focuses on hiking, horseback riding, backpacking, fishing, and wildlife observation. The terrain is steep and rugged, making it best suited for experienced wilderness travelers seeking a remote experience. Unlike some wilderness areas, Sublette has fewer established campsites and maintained trails, emphasizing primitive conditions and a leave-no-trace ethic. Key highlights include towering ridgelines with panoramic views, clear mountain streams supporting excellent fishing, and large open basins carpeted in wildflowers during summer months. Access is commonly gained from the East Fork of the Green River trailhead, which leads into the wilderness. The Sublette Wilderness offers a quiet, relatively undisturbed landscape for visitors looking to explore Wyoming's high country away from crowded trailheads.
